Who doesn’t love a comfy, cozy hat in the fall and winter? Now you can make your very own beautiful handmade beanie – and in just an hour or less! This is the perfect DIY project to make for everyone on your holiday gift list, too! The hat works up so quickly thanks to the chunky yarn, and the hat can be worn two ways – as a slouchy hat, or with the “brim” rolled up to make a tighter fitting hat. The pattern even includes instructions on how to adjust for different sizes, like children’s and men’s!

Pin it for later!

The hat is worked up as just one flat piece of crochet – then it’s cinched up to make a hat shape. So all you need to know how to do for this pattern is chain and double crochet! What a great beginner project this would make. And even if you’re past the beginner level, who doesn’t love a nice easy project that goes quick and looks adorable when finished?! Time is in such short supply, especially during the holidays – so this time-saving pattern is perfect for the most wonderful time of the year!

On 1/26/21 this hat was featured on a very fun One-hour Beanie blog hop by Made With a Twist!!!! Missed the date of the blog hop? Or just want to get all the patterns of this amazing blog hop for a super discounted rate?! You’re in luck! Check out the pattern bundle:

This is your chance to grab all 10 adorable beanie patterns at just $1 each – that’s a crazy low price!! You can purchase your bundle HERE!

This pattern is classic and simple, and if you want to customize it a bit and give it even more cuteness, you can add a faux fur pom pom poof at the top! The cream hat shown in these photos has a giant faux fur pom pom attached and I think it’s a really fun look! You can find a whole bunch of lovely pom poms that are ready to attach to your favorite projects on Amazon HERE! There are also some great tutorials on how to make your own faux fur pom poms, if you’re willing to put a small amount of extra time into the project. My favorite is this one by Whistle & Ivy, which even includes templates that you can print out and use to make different sized pom poms!

The yarn I used for this project is simply one of a kind! If you’ve ever worked with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick, then you know how cozy, chunky and unique it truly is. It’s great for fast, winter-time projects that come out looking better than the store-bought equivalent! I used Spice (on Amazon HERE) in the tutorial and some of the photos you see here.

The cream hat you see here is a lovely shade called Fisherman (on Amazon HERE). This yarn comes in SO many colors, including some gorgeous variegated tones! You could make a hat for everyone on your gift list and suit it to their unique personal tastes, easily!

Supplies
Size N / 10 mm crochet hook
One skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (Super Bulky; colors shown are Fisherman and Spice – nearly entire 106 yds skein is used)
Yarn Needle with large eye
Scissors
Large faux fur pom pom (optional)
Small amount of light or medium weight yarn in similar color to Beanie for sewing Pom Pom (optional)

Abbreviations
BLO = back loop only
Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
FLO = front loop only
Rem = remaining
Rep = repeat
St(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge
4 dc and 2 rows = approx. 2 inches

Size
Finished size approx. 21 inch circumference and 10.5 inch length

Notes
Pattern is for a women’s / teens one size fits most hat. To make hat larger or smaller, increase/decrease initial chaining and amount of rows. For Children’s size, it is recommended to ch 20 and stop hat at Row 15. For Men’s (or larger Women’s) size, it is recommended to chain 24 and repeat Row 2 once more after Row 16.

Instructions
Ch 22.
Row 1 – Dc in 3rd ch from hook, and in each st across. Ch 2, turn (20 dc)
Row 2 – Working in BLO, dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn (20 dc)

Rows 3 – 16 – Rep Row 2. Do not ch 2 at the end of Row 16. (20 dc per row)
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Finishing
Fold beanie in half with right sides facing together. With long tail left over from fastening off on needle, sew side edges of Beanie together, working through BLO of Row 16, and FLO of Row 1.

Working around top edge of Beanie, gather several sts on yarn needle. Rep this process around entire top edge, and pull tightly to cinch hat closed. Secure any rem gap at top by sewing one or two sts through it.

Fasten off, weave in all ends. Turn hat right side out. Hat can be worn “slouchy” as is, or the edge can be rolled up to make a “brim” for a tighter fit.

Optional: with light or medium weight yarn in similar color, sew Pom Pom to top of Beanie. Weave in all ends.

Here is the finished hat!
