Looking for a hat pattern that doesn’t include rounds? Maybe you’re a beginner who wants to get some experience with basic stitches before moving on to making more complex shapes, or maybe you’re a veteran yarncrafter who just wants an easy pattern as a breather between projects. Either way, you will love this easy ribbed, knit-look hat! Plus, you can make it in different sizes, so go ahead and make one for everyone in the family!

Pin it for later!

This hat is so versatile in many ways. It’s worked up in a “single crochet rib” stitch, which not only gives it a “knit look”, but it also makes the fabric incredibly stretchy and accommodating! This is a very basic beanie, but it can still be worn two ways. Worn as is, it will have a slight slouch; but if you roll up the hat at the opening, you have an instant brim and a bit more of a snug/traditional fit!

This is the Knit-Look hat made in the Adult size, and topped with a colorful pom pom!

You may recognize this style of hat from my Easy Chunky Winter Hat pattern. The idea is the same, only this hat is worked with medium weight yarn instead of chunky yarn. This makes it a great all-season hat! With spring coming, a hat with a lighter weight is perfect for those chilly early spring days!

Any medium weight yarn will work well for this hat, which is another reason why it’s so versatile! I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for this project. It’s a great, basic, affordable yarn, and this colorway, “Aran Fleck” (on Amazon HERE!)

The sizes included in the pattern are Toddler, Child, and Adult. But you can customize the size more specifically by using the gauge in the pattern – the gauge tells how many stitches per inch there should be, so add/decrease as you need to!

So who’s ready to work up some hat magic? Let’s go!

Supplies
F-5 / 3.75 mm crochet hook
1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver in Aran Fleck
Yarn Needle
Scissors

Abbreviations
Ch = chain
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
Rem = remaining
Sc = single crochet
Sl St = slip stitch
St(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge
5 sc and 3 rows = about one inch (when very stretched)

Size
Hat can be made in three sizes:
Toddler (about 18 inches circumference, 8.5 inches length)
Child (about 20 inches circumference, 10 inches length)
Teen / Adult (about 21 inches circumference, 11 inches length)

Notes
Hat is worked in single crochet rib stitch (each row is worked in BLO to give a stretchy textured and knitted look). Measurements should be taken when hat is EXTREMELY stretched; since this stitch has so much stretch, it’s important to measure it at its maximum stretch to get an accurate fit.

Instructions
Hat
(Sizing changes are noted in parentheses – sizing reads from Toddler, to Child, to Adult.)
Ch 39 [toddler size] (49 [child size], 54 [adult size]).
Row 1 – sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each st across. Ch 1, turn (38, 48, 53 sc)

Rows 2 – 61 (67, 70) – working in BLO, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Do not ch 1 at the end of last row. (38, 48, 53 sc per row)

Closing the hat
Fold edges of hat together so that right sides are facing together. Sl st through BLO of side closest to you, and through FLO of side furthest away from you. Continue across to attach sides of hat.

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Thread yarn needle with long tail and weave throughout stitches of top of hat; pull to cinch hat closed. It may be necessary to sew through any rem gap at top of hat to secure the gap closed.
Weave in ends.

Here is the finished hat!

    Just wondering how many rows for adult size hats?

      It varies depending on the size, but I usually do around 70!

        How many stitches would you recommend chaining for the first row when making a hat for a 0-3 month old. I plan on making it about 14″ circumference when finished. Thank you!

          Hi Lori! The gauge is 5 sc = about an inch, so I’d multiply that times 14 and then add like 5-10 more to accommodate for the closing of the hat. So maybe give 75-80 chs a shot, do the foundation row, stretch it, and see if that measures 15-16 inches (14 inches plus a few inches of “give” for cinching the hat). Thanks! ~ Melissa

    How can I make this pattern smaller for a baby?

      Great question – toddler sizes are included in the pattern so I would go ahead and take around 4-5 sts off the length and 4-5 rows off the width; that takes off around an inch. You can customize it further to make it smaller for the baby age/size you have in mind too!

    Youdid not specify how many rows before closing

      Hi Margo! The pattern says 61 rows (or more depending on the size you’re making – other sizes are in parentheses) before closing! You can also customize the amount of rows to the size you like. Thanks! ~ Melissa
