By popular demand, here is my Sunflower Square / Blanket crochet pattern! When I first experimented with making a sunflower afghan last year (using a lovely pattern from http://momsloveofcrochet.com), I was so happily surprised by the amazing response it got from everyone! Apparently, sunflowers are a lot of people’s favorite flowers! While making that blanket, I started changing up some aspects and adding my own touches. Fast forward nearly a year, and I have had numerous people asking how to make one that looks like the one that I made. So, I put on my thinking cap and started working a design that had a similar sunflower goodness, but that was totally original and my own. Here are the results!

I knew I wanted a large “eye” of the sunflower, and petals that had a very definitive shape – rounded around the body of the petal, and very pointed at the tip of the petal. And most of all, I wanted the pattern to be easy and fun! I hope you enjoy the finished pattern, and that it brightens up whatever cozy space you decide to decorate with it!

Update May 2021: I recently made a sunflower afghan with cream borders/edging and I am in love with the results! The pattern has been updated to include the yarn and amounts needed if you’d prefer to make this version!

I went with a classic for this project, and chose Red Heart Super Saver in Gold, Coffee, and Light Sage. I also think the outer/green part of the blanket would look great in dark green, or any other color you choose to make the sunflower inside the square really “pop”! You can find some Super Saver on Amazon HERE!

The blanket in the photos here is made up of 24 squares – four across, six down. I thought it came out a very nice size for a small throw, but you could make the afghan in any size you’d like by adjusting the number of squares on your blanket. So whether it’s a baby blanket or a king-sized bedspread you’re looking to make, feel free to get creative!

(Pin it for later here!)

Ready to make an entire sunflower field without even having to leave the comfort of your favorite chair? Then let’s get planting….errr…crocheting!

(Looking for an ad-free PDF version of this pattern? It’s available in my shop HERE!)

Here is a video tutorial I made for my YouTube channel that you might find helpful for making the Sunflower Square!

This blanket goes beautiful with my Sunflower Placemats – click HERE for that pattern!

Supplies
Size H/8 5.00 mm crochet hook
Red Heart Super Saver in:

  • Gold (3 skeins / 950 yds)
  • Coffee (1 skein / 360 yds)
  • Light Sage (1 skein / 360 yds for squares with green edging)
  • Buff (1 skein / 160 yds for blanket shown with green square edging / beige border)
  • Aran (2 skeins / 520 yds for squares with cream edging)

Yarn Needle
Scissors

Abbreviations

*= indicates the start and end of a section that is repeated
BLO = back loop only
Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
FLO front loop only
Hdc = half double crochet
Rep = repeat
Rnd = round
Sc = single crochet
Sk = skip
Sl st = slip stitch
Sp(s) = spaces
St = stitch
Tr = triple crochet

Gauge
3 dc across = about .75 inches; 2 rnds of dc = about 1 inch in length

Size
One square measures about 10 inches square (about 9 inches square when assembled into afghan)

Notes
Chains do not count as stitches in the stitch count throughout the pattern.

Square will initially curl upwards while you are crocheting it; this can be adjusted by stretching the square considerably when finished (pulling from corners outward until piece lays flat). In Rnd 7 of Sunflower Square, you may wish to chain 8 instead of 7, if your work is curling too much.

Throw blanket in this pattern consists of 24 squares (4 across, 6 down). Blanket size can be adjusted by adding/reducing number of squares.

Instructions

Rnd 1 – With Coffee, make a magic ring. Ch 2, 12 dc in ring. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2 (12 dc)
Rnd 2 – 2 dc in each st. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2 (24 dc)
Rnd 3 – 2 dc in first st, dc in next st; rep around. Join with sl st to first dc. Join Gold in last st. Ch 2 (36 dc)
Rnd 4 – 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts; rep around. Join with sl st to first dc. (48 dc)

Rnd 5 – Ch 5, sc in first st, tr in next 3 sts. Sk 2 sts on Rnd 4, and join with sl st in next st. Sl st in next st. Rep around for a total of 12 petals. Do not sl st twice on last petal. (1 sc and 3 tr per petal)

Rnd 6 – Working around each petal made in Rnd 5, ch 1, sc in first st, hdc over next 2 sts, 2 dc in next, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next st, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st. Sl st in between current petal and the next (second sl st from Rnd 5). Rep around. Fasten off Gold. (2 sc, 3 hdc, 10 dc per petal)

Rnd 7 – Attach Light Sage in the ch-3 sp (from Rnd 6) of any petal. Ch 7, sl st into ch-3 sp of next petal. Rep around.
Rnd 8 – Ch 2, *make 8 dc in first ch-7 sp from Rnd 7, and 8 dc in next ch-7 sp from Rnd 7. [Dc 4, ch 3, dc 4] in next ch-7 sp.* Rep from * to * 3 more times. Join with sl st to top of first dc. Fasten off, stretch fabric outwards considerably, pulling from corners, in order to relax the stitches and make square flatter.

Assembly
Put 2 squares together with right sides facing each other. Pull Buff through FLO of square facing away from you, and through BLO of square facing towards you. Ch 1. Sc in same st, and rep this process to sc the two squares together. Continue this process in each direction – sc two squares together both length-wise and width-wise, until squares are all completely attached. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Edging
Rnd 1 – Attach Buff in any of the four corners of blanket. Ch 1, 3 sc in ch-sp of corner. Sc in each st around blanket, making [3 sc, ch 1, 3 sc] in corners (first photo below). Make a sc in ch-sps along the edge of each square, as well (second photo below). In last corner, where Edging begins, [sc 3, ch 1] and join with sl st to first st of Edging.

Rnd 2 – *Ch 2, dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st. Sl st over next 3 sts.* Rep from * to * around, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Here is the finished blanket!

    I have been looking for a “Giant” Sunflower pattern for so long! Can’t believe I somehow stumbled on this yesterday – of course when I wasn’t looking for it! Beautiful! I’m going to start saving for yarn right away – and will probably do at least one square right away – I think I have these colors in my stash… THANK YOU for sharing so freely with us! This is beautiful! I love Sunfkowers – I had a whole patch in my garden a couple years ago – and the birds were so grateful for all those tasty seeds.

    Can’t wait to finish this blanket but I am having a hard time with getting the right amount stitches and petals. I was wondering if you have a video? If not could you do a video?

      Hi Tara! I’m planning on making a video sometime in the near future! I’m glad you’re excited to finish this blanket! Can I ask which part of the petals are not adding up? I might be able to help! I know some of my testers were trying to make a stitch in the tip of the petal in Rnd 6 and that is actually not a stitch to work into. Let me know if I can help 🙂 Thanks!

      Love this blanket, going to make it for my sister, thank you for the lovely pattern. I’m looking for the perfect yarn and was wondering if I could use cotton yarn, I don’t like the pilling and fraying I get from using acrylic yarn. Thanks for the input.

        Thanks so much Kim! Have fun with the pattern! I think you could definitely use cotton yarn as long as it’s medium weight and your gauge is correct. Thank you!! ~ Melissa

    Love the pattern! On my first flower and am having difficulty understanding the portion going around the petals ( the sc, hd, dc, etc.) I am coming out with a very rounded petal, so I know I am doing something incorrectly as well I don’t have the space at the top of my petal for the sage colour….. help!!!!

    1. Melissa

      April 25, 2019 at 1:27 am

      Hi Michelle, so glad you love the pattern! I would love to help you make your petals! Are you making the [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in the tip of the petal for Rnd 6? That is what makes the petal “pointy”, and the ch-3 is the space where the Light Sage goes in the next Rnd. Let me know if that helps!!! Thank you!

    I’m just planning my colors for this beautiful blanket and can’t wait to get started. I love sunflowers!! Just wondering if you think I could fill in right outside of the petals but before where you use the green? I’d like to make that blue for sky. Could you help me with this idea? Thanks so much for your help for making my own ideas come true!

    1. Melissa

      May 20, 2019 at 10:17 pm

      Hi Cindy! I’m so glad you’re about to make a Sunflower Blanket! Hmm, about adding blue between the petals…off the top of my head, I wanna say you could probably attach the sky blue yarn at the base of one of the petals, and make one or two sc sts in blue, then sl st to the petal right next to that one. Then you could just keep going that way until you had connected the two petals using sky blue yarn. The trick would be to add enough sts around the “peak” of the petals so that the petals were still spaced out evenly! It’s an interesting idea!!! If you try it out, I’d love to know how it turns out!!! Thanks again so much!

    On round six what do you mean hdc very next two stitches. Does that mean two separate hdc or are we doing a hdc together?

    1. Melissa

      June 8, 2019 at 5:09 pm

      Hi Cheryl! It’s not a hdc2tog – it’s two separate hdc sts made into the same st! Hope that helps 🙂

  • Amber

    June 18, 2019 at 3:28 am

    Thanks so much for this pattern! I wanted to check however, I’m having an issue with the petals… I’m getting six petals instead of 12 and they are not becoming 12 petals in round 6. What am I doing wrong? I started over three times and I’m still getting the same results. Thanks in advance!

  • Amber

    June 18, 2019 at 3:36 am

    Actually, I think I just figured it out…I wasn’t paying attention to the images because they were confusing me at first. But it looks like after the five chains, you are taking the next step and going right back into the same chains as opposed to the next available stitch. I was just confused, can you let me know if I’m correct?

    1. Melissa

      June 18, 2019 at 10:47 am

      Hi Amber! Sorry for the confusion! Yes, after the ch-5 you are working back down into those chains before attaching to the eye of the sunflower (brown part) with a sl st, and repeating 11 more times. Also, it might help to make sure you have the right amount of sts after you finish the eye/brown portion, because if you don’t then you won’t have enough sts to make the right amount of petals!! Thanks for asking! Hope you love the pattern!! ~ Melissa

    June 19, 2019 at 1:20 am

    Hi. Thank you for the pattern. It was perfect timing for a graduation present. I have a question. On Round 6, I feel like it is lopsided with one HDC on one side of the petal and 2 on the other. I did 2 HDC on each side. I’m now working on the light sage and thinking I need to do 8 chains between each petal because I can’t figure out how to fit 8 DC into a base of 7 SC. I hope my questions make sense. Thank you for this perfect gift idea,

    1. Melissa

      June 19, 2019 at 2:13 am

      Hi Sandi! I am so glad to hear you’re making this sunflower blanket as a graduation gift!! About the light sage edging around the sunflower, I found that making ch-8 with 8 dc on top of that did not look as good as ch-7 with 8 dc on top. But it couldn’t hurt to experiment a bit if you’d like to see what yours looks like with ch-8 on that rnd instead of ch-7! You are so welcome and thank you! Hope you love the pattern – happy crocheting! ~ Melissa

    Love the pattern!! Working on it for my daughter for a Christmas gift. I would love a video of the petals! I too am having trouble getting to the point instead of making it look round.
    Thanks!

    1. Melissa

      June 20, 2019 at 9:31 pm

      That’s awesome, Lori, I hope your daughter loves it! So, the point of the petals is made by making the [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] after the first few sts of the petal – the ch-3 in particular is what makes it pointy. I do have a video tutorial in the works, as well, so please stay tuned!!! Thank you so much!

      Hi Jodi! That’s a great question! I did not block my sunflower squares before assembling them. I just pulled them at each corner significantly to do away with some of the curling. But if you want to block them, I don’t see how it would hurt! Thanks for using my pattern 🙂 Melissa

    I have loved making this sunflower blanket. I am left handed so watched your tutorial and then watched a video tutorial doing the stitches left handed. Is there a video of you sewing it together? I’d like to see it, not read it.

      July 2, 2020 at 12:17 pm

      Hi Kathy! I’m so glad to hear that! And I’m glad you were able to find some resources for left-handed crocheters that helped, as well! I am trying to teach myself how to crochet left-handed so that I can make my patterns and videos more accessible to left-handed crocheters; it’s slow-going because I am right-handed and it feels really off to switch to my left hand!!! As for the video, unfortunately I do not have a video of assembling the squares at the moment! There are photos in the pattern in that section, if you prefer visuals! In the future, I might add a separate “granny square assembly” video to my channel as the method I use here is what I do for all my squares/blankets. I hope that helps! Way to go on your squares and thank you for your comment!!!! ~ Melissa 🙂

    Hi Melissa I really love this pattern, but I don’t want to wait for amazon to deliver, could you tell me approximately what ply wool you have used, I googled and got many different ply’s, for this brand of wool
    I would like to shop tomorrow and get started as soon as possible

      Hi Christine! It looks like it’s 4 ply yarn – medium weight (weight class “4” or worsted weight). Hope that helps! And that you enjoy the pattern! ~ Melissa

    I made this beautiful blanket. It was my first crochet project. Thank you for the great pattern it was wonderfully written and the pictures were very helpful in guiding me along.
    The only thing I didn’t like about it are the spaces between the petals. I guess I should have considered that before i started.
    Also I needed much more yarn than the pattern said. Maybe I used the wrong size/type.

    1. Melissa

      May 4, 2021 at 2:24 am

      Hi Kelly! Thank you so much, I’m happy to hear you liked the pattern! The large size of the square does produce some spacing between the petals; some choose to make a backing for the squares for this reason! And thank you for the info about the yardage; I will need to re-check that. Sometimes things like yarn/hooks size, gauge, etc. can affect that, but I appreciate the heads up so I can look into it! I’m happy this was your first crochet project (congrats!) and hope you get lots of use out of your blanket!! ~ Melissa

    Melissa, I purchased the sunflower square blanket to crochet a blanket for my daughter. I tried it out on some scrapes of yarn before I started. I really like the pattern it is super easy. However rounds 7 and 8 do not seem right. They are very tight and I can’t get them to lay flat. My question is ——- is there a structural reason for the chain 7 and 8 dc s ? I reworked it with chain 9 and 10 dcs and it worked much better.

    1. Melissa

      November 27, 2022 at 2:50 am

      Hi Judy, I’m so glad you like the pattern! So, my first thought is that maybe your chains are a bit tighter than mine and my testers’ were, so they’re coming out smaller and therefore tighter / not as flat. If your rework looks better with the tension you’re using, I’d say go with that!! You could try re-checking your gauge and making your stitches a bit more loose too, but it sounds like you’ve already come up with a way to re-work it. Hope that helps! Thanks! ~ Melissa

    Hi there! I’m working this pattern – I’m so excited as this will be my first big project. I just finished making all the sunflower squares.

    I have a question – have you ever seen anyone join the squares and do the border with the coffee colored thread instead of buff? I have so much of the coffee left, but I’m wondering how it would look.

    Thanks for this great project!

    1. Melissa

      January 24, 2023 at 2:24 pm

      Hi Priya! Thanks so much for asking, and I’m excited for this being your first big project!! I’ve seen folks use other colors including browns in place of the buff yarn. The yarn used to join doesn’t make a huge difference, so I say go for it! It’s a bit darker so it might make the flowers pop a bit more 🙂

    I love this!! I was wondering if you have a suggestion on how to fill in the open holes between the petals? I was thinking it would make it a little more cozy. Thank you

    1. Melissa

      February 9, 2023 at 9:35 pm

      Hi Trina! You could try making a separate square as a backing for the sunflower square, and attach it before you assemble the blanket! Or you could attach the assembled sunflower afghan to another piece of fabric as a backing (like fleece). I’d have to play around with the pattern to see if there’s a way to crochet in between the petals to fill up any gaps! Hope that helps! Thank you 🙂 ~ Melissa
