Sunflowers always look so happy! They’re the perfect touch to any decor for summer or fall – or any season if you just happen to love sunflowers! These sunflowers placemats are easy to make and are perfect on the dining room table or on the table on your deck or patio. What a fun way to make any meal just a little bit prettier!

Pin it for later!

You could also use the smaller placemat, which is about 9 inches across, as a large coaster! What a fun way to brighten up your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or evening glass of wine!

The Best of 30 Days of Cozy Feature Day!

And guess what? On 10/22/21 this pattern is being featured in The Best Of 30 Days of Cozy by Made with a Twist! That means you can get the PDF pattern for 50% off on 10/22/21 (beginning of day EST) through 10/24/21 (end of day EST)! You can find the coupon code over on the main blog hop page, then come back and click the second button below to snag your copy!

These fantastic flowers are a must have for any sunflower lover! They’d be a perfect compliment to my Sunflower Granny Square pattern (find the pattern HERE!), which looks great as a throw blanket!

My Sunflower Granny Square pattern assembled into a small afghan. How fun would it be to have this pretty throw on your patio while enjoying a meal on some Sunflower Placemats?!

If the placemats and granny squares look similar to you, it’s because they are! In fact, these placemats follow the first several rounds of my granny square pattern. If you love video tutorials, here is my Sunflower Granny Square video tutorial – since the first rounds of the square and the placemats are the same, you can follow the video to make these placemats!

My go to yarn colors for sunflowers are a stash favorite of mine, Red Heart Super Saver in Gold (on Amazon HERE!) and Coffee (on Amazon HERE!). They’re bright but not neon; bold but still gentle on the eyes. Just right for sunflowers!!!!

This is a great looking sunflower pattern and I can’t wait to make it. My niece wants to use a sunflower theme for her nursery and I’m wondering if I could adjust this pattern to make a rug. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks so much!

    1. Melissa

      June 25, 2020 at 8:06 pm

Hi Jen! Thank you so much! I love the idea of a sunflower themed nursery, how sweet! I think this could be adjusted to make a rug; you would probably need to use 2 strands of very thick jumbo yarn, like t-shirt yarn. Or you could use really big hand-knitting wool. You’d need a hook size 19 mm or bigger, I think. You could also try using 3 or 4 strands of bulky yarn (like Wool Ease Thick and Quick) together with a large hook. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for using my pattern!! ~ Melissa

Melissa, I’m ready to purchase yarn for the 9″ placemats. Does it take one skein of each color per mat? I want to make four.

Thank you for your help and this pattern.

Hi Alice, sorry, I just added the yardage info to the list of supplies! One large placemat takes about 80 yards, and there’s over 360 yards in one skein of Gold. So you should just be able to make four large placemats with one skein! Hope that helps and that you enjoy the pattern!! Thanks 🙂 ~ Melissa

Good afternoon Melissa. I’m trying to get back in to crocheting and haven’t done it in 43 years. I would love to make the Sunflower placemats for my step daughter who loves sunflowers. Do you happen to have a video making this? I also want to make her a sunflower afghan if you have a video of that as well.

    1. Melissa

      June 9, 2022 at 9:40 pm

Hi Donna! I’m glad you’re getting back into crochet! There’s a video for my sunflower afghan (the placemat is just the first several rounds of the afghan square) on my YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K8QUbqZKC8

I hope your step daughter loves them – thanks for using my patterns!!!

Hi! Love these and am making. I just finished the brown with double strands of yarn and I need to know if you are using two strands of gold for the petals for the large placemat? Thanks for taking time to answer my question and for sharing your beautiful pattern. Sandy

    1. Melissa

      March 18, 2023 at 11:11 pm

Hi Sandra! I’m so glad to hear that! Yes, you would use two strands of gold as well if making the large placemat 🙂 You are so welcome and thank you!! Hope you love the pattern! ~ Melissa

    March 24, 2023 at 4:02 pm

Any suggestions on care for these? I would think spot clean when possible but don’t think drying after washing would be a good idea because am sure petals would curl up. Thanks!!!!!

    1. Melissa

      March 24, 2023 at 4:23 pm

Hi Sandra! I would follow the directions on the yarn you used if you plan on washing/drying – you might be able to reshape the petals through blocking or just laying them flat to dry. But spot clean is probably the best option if you can! You’re so welcome and thank you! ~ Melissa
