(Pin it for later!)

Even though I’m just now releasing this pattern, I’ve had it in mind to make a candy corn witch hat for a while. Years and years ago, I saw a candy corn witch costume in a Halloween costume catalogue, and fell in love with the idea! It’s the perfect combo of two Halloween symbols.

When designing this yarn, I knew I wanted a chunky yarn that would have a stiff structure when worked up, in order to maintain the “cone” shape of the hat. A favorite chunky yarn of mine is Lion Brand Hometown USA. It comes in so many different colors, and is incredibly affordable and versatile for a chunkier yarn! New York White (on Amazon HERE), Pittsburgh Yellow (on Amazon HERE), and Syracuse Orange (on Amazon HERE) are the perfect candy corn colors!

You could also make this hat in other colors, like fun stripes in Halloween colors. Or, make it a solid color and add stars to make the cutest wizard hat ever! You could customize this to whatever your Halloween costume is – just use your imagination!

So who’s ready to have some frightful fun?! Grab your broomsticks…errr…crochet hooks….and let’s get started!

Sorry, I’m a crochet newbie with a question. For the brim. Is the FLO just for row 38 or for all subsequent brim rows? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi Rachel! Awesome that you’re starting on your crochet journey! Great question – it actually only refers to Row 38! After that, you’re crocheting in both loops! Hope that helps 🙂 Enjoy! ~ Melissa

Hi, question about the Rnd 38. I did FLO and I continued to Rnd 43 and the brim curls under instead of up. Do you have an idea what I’m doing wrong?

    1. Melissa

      January 6, 2023 at 12:35 pm

Hi Angie! Are you doing FLO on Rnd 38 only? After that, you can go through both loops on all the other rnds! If that’s not the case, could I ask what kind of yarn/hook you’re using? Sometimes that can affect the shape. Let me know! Thanks! ~ Melissa

    Hey!
I’m currently making this hat, and I’ve run into a bit of a problem. I’ve made it to the end of row 37 and i’m starting on the brim now. However, my hat seems too big. The height is correct (15 inches), but the circumference is about 30 inches, not 21 as it should be. What did I do wrong here and more importantly, how do I fix it?

    1. Melissa

      August 14, 2023 at 5:28 pm

Hi Eve! Thanks so much for reaching out! The hat fits a 21 inch head circumference, so being a little bigger than 21 inches is okay, since it’s not as snug as a regular hat. But that’s a big difference! I would try checking your gauge – it sounds like it probably doesn’t match what the pattern calls for, which is why the hat is coming out so much bigger. Can I ask what yarn you’re using? Some yarns have the same weight but a totally different texture that can make a piece work up in a much different way. Do your stitch counts for each round match the pattern? Let me know and I’d be happy to help troubleshoot this with you any way I can! Thanks! ~ Melissa

        August 14, 2023 at 5:39 pm

Thank you so much for helping! I didn’t even notice this pattern having a gauge!! The yarn I’m using is Alize Velluto, it’s very fluffy, so that probably explains why it came out so much bigger 😀 I’m still quite new to crochet, so I didn’t know about the texture of the yarn mattering this much, thank you! Is there any way to fix this or do i need to go buy new yarn?

        1. Melissa

          August 14, 2023 at 6:16 pm

You are so welcome, anytime! That could explain it then – I think you can definitely still use the yarn you have though! No worries, even some different colorways of the exact same yarn are a bit different, there’s a ton of variation in yarns! So if the length is right but the circumference is too big, you might want to try only increasing up to 6 or 7 stitches instead of increasing up to 8. You could add an extra regular single crochet round between increases, on top of what the pattern calls for, to make sure the length comes out right. Another option would be going down a hook size, but that could make your stitches very hard to work with if the yarn is fluffy!

            August 14, 2023 at 6:42 pm

I did a bit of measuring and decided to try undoing the last 4 rows to make it a bit smaller. I’m making this as a gift for a friend, and got it down from 31 inches to 27 inches, and my friend’s head circumference is 25 inches, so I think that this should work! I also only lost 1 inch in height, so I’m concluding this as good enough so that I won’t have to undo all my work 😀 Thank you again for all your help, this is my first time trying one of your patterns and I’ll definitely be doing more of them in the future! This was a very fun and easy project to do!

            August 14, 2023 at 7:18 pm

Oh great, it sounds like you figured out a good way to do it then! I hope your friend loves it! If it’s not tall enough, you can always add some plain single crochet rounds to the bottom too. You are so welcome! I hope you check out more of my patterns for sure!! So glad you enjoyed it!!! ^_^ ~ Melissa

What size hook would I use to make this with acrylic yarn?

    1. Melissa

      October 27, 2023 at 12:37 am

Hi Norma! That depends on the weight of the acrylic yarn. If it’s super bulky, like what the pattern calls for, you should be fine with the same hook size!
